New Player Information
"I'm new to Live Action Role Play!"
First things first, Welcome! We know that those of you who are completely new to Live Action Role Play (LARPing) often have quite a few questions about who we are, what we do, and how it all works. Below you will find answer to our most common questions. If you still need more information, please use the form below and we will do our best to get back with you as quickly as we can!
"What is LARPing?"
LARPing, or Live Action Role Play, as you might have guessed is interactive role-playing. We come together as our various characters (created using our rule book) to act out the lives of heros. Most LARPs encourage players to find costumes, props and other items to make the world more immersive for everyone. You will, metaphorically, become the persona you create! You will speak as your character, react as your character would, and even argue as your character would. All of these aspects serve to draw you into the world, to help develop your character, and ultimately provide an enjoyable game for everyone.
"How does your combat work?"
Fallen Empires uses what we call "Boffer Weapons" in light-touch combat. Most weapons in game are PVC or graphite/fiberglass cores wrapped in varying degrees of pipe-insulation (the closed cell foam kind) and then covered by nylon or duct tape. Each weapon must have at minimum a 2" open-cell foam thrusting tip on any surface that you are going to use to "stab" at other players. Arrows, spells, vials and other projectiles are represented using birdseed filled cloth packets. All combat in our game is done using what we call "light-touch." This means that you do not swing as hard as you possibly can, but only swing hard enough so that the other player feels it and registers it as a hit on their person.
"Where do you have your games?"
Firstly, we have two types of events: "Fair Days" or single day events often held in a park local to the Dallas/Fort Worth metroples, and "Full Weekend Events" which are most always held at a group camp at Lake Murray State Park in Ardmore, OK. Our Fair Days usually run from 9:00am to 7:00pm and can vary due to time of year and/or weather. Our Full Weekend Events usually start around 9:30-10:00pm on a Friday night and run until around 12:00-2:00pm on Sunday.
"Where are your rules?"
If you'll head to the Documents page you'll find all our game documents including our core rulebook, supplementary rulebook, and a variety of other general game information.
"There is a BUNCH of information in here, how should I get started?"
This question is probably one of the most common and in turn, one that causes some frustration for new players. Our rulebook at first glance probably appears pretty crazy. Everything from different races to skills to powers are all necessary to play the game. To this we say "it will get easier." To borrow a phrase from a friend...
"No one knows all the rules by heart. If something happens that you don't understand, feel free to ask anyone around. We've all been there, and you won't get any static for not knowing how Massive interacts with Parry and Strongarm. Odds are good that if you have a question, someone in the immediate vicinity has a ready answer. Combat can get very confusing, but it really does get easier and more intuitive over time. In the interim, it's inevitable that you'll take too much damage (or too little), forget your spell incants, lose track of your special attacks, and more, but it's expected from new players and everyone's happy to help clarify things." ~Royal
Well, those are pretty much the basics! I encourage all new LARPers and new players to visit both our Forums and our Facebook Page for more information and to introduce yourself. There is probably someone on the Facebook page right now that could answer most questions you might have. If there is a specific question you don't wish to be public, please use the form below.
We hope this at least answered some of your questions and if it didn't we look forward to hearing from you!
